Top 5 Emma Stone Movie Performances

If there is one actress who is creating much buzz this awards season, its Emma Stone. The 28-year-old Hollywood darling has swept away critics with her breathtaking performance in the Damien Chazelle musical La La Land. In the film, Emma is reunited with her two time co-star Ryan Gosling. The pair played onscreen lovers in the 2011 romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love and were reunited two years later for Gangster Squad.

Throughout her career, Emma Stone has been delivering memorable performances. Her natural likability and charisma easily make her one of the most bankable actresses of our generation. So in honor of the rising star and possible Best Actress awardee, ExploreTalent is counting down the starlet’s top five movie performances so far.

Emma Stone’s Best Movie Performances

5. Wichita in Zombieland (2009)

Zombieland is undeniably one of the most brilliant modern zombie movies ever, and Emma Stone is absolutely excellent in it. She stars alongside Woody Harrelson, Abigail Breslin, and Jessie Eisenberg, but among the talented cast Emma definitely stands out as she plays the role of the hard hitting con-artist Wichita.

Fun fact: Zombieland went on to become the highest-grossing zombie film ever released, until World War Z took over in 2013.

4. Eugenia ‘Skeeter’ Phelan in The Help (2011)

The Help

Perhaps one of Emma Stone’s biggest talents is that she manages to hold her own even when acting alongside other Hollywood heavyweights. In The Help, Emma is part of an ensemble cast including Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, and Jessica Chastain. She portrays Eugenia ‘Skeeter’ Phelan, an aspiring author who exposes the racism that maids go through while working for wealthy white families.

3. Sam Thomson in Birdman (2014)

Audiences are so used to seeing Emma Stone play goody-two shoes type of characters that it was refreshing to see the young actress widen her range by playing a struggling addict in the Oscar-winning feature Birdman. Her performance earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress that same year, and she’s an absolute joy to watch onscreen. One scene in particular shows Emma engaging in an emotional argument with her father (played by Michael Keaton), and the emotion she conveys proves that she is ready to be a major player in Hollywood.

2.  Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man 1 and 2 (2012 and 2014)

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Emma Stone may not be the first actress to play Gwen Stacy, but she’s undoubtedly the most memorable one. Emma is often credited for saving the rather lifeless franchise that featured Andrew Garfield as the titular superhero. Both Emma and Andrew’s chemistry served as the film’s redeeming qualities as well, and the pair both gave more depth to their respective characters. Emma’s charm continued toward the second installment of the franchise, and even after her character’s death, Emma’s portrayal of Gwen Stacy stands to be one of the best in Marvel history.

1. Olive Penderghast in Easy A (2010)

Easy A

Finally, we have the role that put Emma Stone in the map. In Easy A, she plays Olive Penderghast, a teen who a lot of young girls can probably relate to. Emma plays her with so much wit, honesty, and charm that audiences may find themselves rooting for Olive even at her darkest times. The role earned Emma her first Best Actress nomination at the 68th Golden Globes, and it clearly cemented her status as Hollywood’s next leading star.
