Margot Robbie‘s take on the popular DC villain Harley Quinn proved to be one of the redeeming qualities in the summer blockbuster film Suicide Squad. The film, though heavily panned by critics, was a smashing hit in the box office. It made more than enough for Warner Brothers to consider making even more films under the DC comics extended universe. But due to the poor critical reception, the production company is looking to improve a few elements in their future films, and they are starting off by tapping the most talented minds in the industry.
Harley Quinn/Birds of Prey Spin-off in the Works
The Harley Quinn solo movie has been the subject of an ongoing rumor, and it was reported that the executives over at Warner Brothers have long been contemplating on a possible spin-off even before Suicide Squad was released. It’s no question that Robbie fully embraced that role, and her excellent portrayal of the DC staple was well-received by audiences. Things are about to get even more interesting as not only will Harley Quinn get her stand-alone film, but it is also set to feature another iconic DC squad—Birds of Prey.
The rumor began when Heroic Hollywood‘s El Mayimbe appeared as a guest in the October 2015 episode of Collider Heroes. Mayimbe mentioned that Warner Bros. was indeed contemplating on an upcoming Teen Titans movie as well as another film that featured the most iconic female heroines and villains of the DCEU. Just last November 11, 2016, Christina Hodson had been confirmed to write the screenplay for the upcoming movie. Hodson’s other film credits include the 2016 thriller Shut In as well as an untitled Transformers film, which will focus on the character Bumblebee.
Birds of Prey is a DC comic books series that centers around a group of crime fighters including Barbara Gordon (Batgirl, or sometimes credited as Oracle), Black Canary, and Huntress. Other characters include Oliver Queen (Green Arrow) and Hawkgirl. Harley Quinn did make an appearance as a villain in the comic series, so it will be interesting to see how her character will play out in the movie version.
As for Robbie, the actress is set to not only reprise her role as the Joker’s partner in crime, but she is reportedly co-producing the upcoming feature as well.
